Magic Perfume and Paper Hearts

I went to view "Paper Hearts," starring Charlyn Yi and Michael Cera this week. As a "documentary" about finding the meaning of love from a diverse cross section of the U.S., I think it basically fell short. The comments by "experts" were hardly informative and Yi's ungraceful style of interviewing didn't help the situation much. Most interesting interviews involved personal stories from long time couples. Who doesn't like an epic love story? Also saving the road trip segment were the accompanying amateur puppet shows apparently put up by Yi herself.

Where the movie shines is with the relationship between Yi and the equally socially awkward Cera. Though scripted, the timing and dialogue and especially the self-consciousness of the actors really brought life to this indie flick. I know this kind of relationship exists because I happen to know a couple just like them. It's real!

Equally convincing was Yi's relationship with the producer/director. Their friendship involves unethically looking at film footages of Cera admitting his interest in Yi to shooting plastic cups, has a freshness seldom seen in film. They support and push each other as well as annoy the hell out of each other, just like real friendships.

This film is imbalanced in that I find parts engaging while others trite. But, as an entertainment piece that offers the unique and highly under filmed romance between cool, sweet, creative nerds, it's two thumps up.

Catch it at your local art house before it's too late. Oh, below is a contestant from Yi's contest that gave away an ipod to the winner of the best "Magic Perfume" (song from Paper Hearts) cover. Kristy Hanson didn't win but loved her take nonetheless.

Graphic Public Service Announcement - Texting While Driving

It is estimated that as much as a quarter of the 40,000 vehicle fatalities in the U.S. annually may be linked to drivers texting. Let's face it, almost all of us have been guilty of texting at the wheels without much care. But, in fact, you can increase the chances of a collision by 23% if you text while driving. This graphic PSA produced by the Gwent Police Department in Wales says it all.

Beyond Hot - Amber Rose

Sorry, but this woman is so fine it hurts. Really, if you can look good with the shaved head, you deserve a medal. Half Italian and half Cape Verdean, 26-year-old Amber Rose is a Ford model. She's also in a hip hop video or two. Oh, yeah, she's probably most known for being Kanye West's girlfriend.

Amber has funky fashion sense and flaunts it in public often. She's admitted proudly to picking all her own outfits and not utilizing a stylist. On top of that, she has an enviable outlook about sex and seems so open and earnest about her own sexuality. Kudos to this amazing looking vixen. Listen to an interview with her below.

You're a Hot Looking Anorexic!

I watched a talk show recently when the guest told the host she’s so skinny, she looked like a holocaust victim. The host’s response was, “why, thank you…” What kind of world do we live in when being called a “holocaust survivor” to describe ones weight is considered a compliment.

This mentality is not exclusive to the entertainment world, I have girlfriends (and one straight male friend) who completely buy into the idea that looking unhealthy is actually attractive. For instance, I’ve heard my girlfriends express happiness when they get the runs because at least they lost a lot of weight quickly.

It’s gotten to the point where I cannot compliment their bodies when they look healthy because immediately I’m accused of calling them “fat.” Saying someone looks “good” is translated through their "anorexic ears" as “obese.” In this case, what would constitute a compliment? Here are some good ones to try.

1. When someone goes through a major crisis like a break up or lost of job, you don’t say “cheer up” or “sorry.” To make them feel better, you say instead, "You should go through major depression more often, it does your waistline good..".

2. In general, say. "OMG, you look so anorexic, what’s your secret?"

3. "You look like a prepubescent kid, I’ve never seen you better."

4. "You’re my skinniest friend. I’m a whale standing next to you."

Oh, and you should use these kinds of compliments often because lack of recognition also means calling them “fat.” I have some real insecure friends with body image issues you say? Well, yes, but then again, you may have friends that also say, "I look so fat," when you're hard press to find out where they would actually store it. Then you're in the same boat I am in.

These "skinny" folks, including many women and gay men, represent a vast number of people of all ages, creeds…living in the United States. It’s a state of mind that is constantly reinforced in images all around us. It takes quite a bit of deprogramming to rethink our ideas of beauty and weight. I'm not exactly immune myself but with most things, it's a work in progress.

I’ll leave you with this story. I was in LA at a cute brunch place when I saw an emaciated pug. Pugs are known to be, well, pudgy. I told its owner that it was the skinniest pug I’ve even seen. To which, he announced in gay diva style, “he’s an LA pug, honey.” Scary.

Oh, and if you found the image of the woman above, "hot," you should also check your "anorexic eyes." Just sayin'. Agree?*gMzzA8Rwlk*J4UyJaKeQDysJH/20042009002.jpg

So You Think You Can Dance Finale

Congrats to Jeanine Mason for winning So You Think You Can Dance. Not a stand out favorite in the beginning, she improved so dramatically that by the finale, she proved a major contender. Well deserved, I was impressed with her strength and determination. I really like the diverse body types of modern dancers and Jeanine's figure was wonderful to see.

My favorites were Melissa Sandvig and Ade Obayomi who were eliminated in the final six. They were partnered together for most of the season and performed amazing pieces such as "Breast Cancer Dance" choreographed by Tyce Diorio. See their video log below.

Melissa was often referred to as the oldest contestant at 29 but also the first classically trained ballerina or as her auditioned showed, the "naughty ballerina." She was just so controlled in her movements and outstanding in her performances. I was disappointed to see her not make the final four.

I was down right shocked when Ade, a sound engineer/DJ, was eliminated along with Melissa. He has such a unique style of modern dance and hip hop, I loved watching his solos! He also represented the gentle giant who was arguably the strongest dancer who could do amazing lifts. I mostly enjoyed his smile and that hair pick of his. He has personality and style that deemed him winner worthy.

Look forward to the next season this fall. Debating on going to the So You Think you Can Dance tour or not. Who were your favs.

Mission Accomplished - North Korea is Back on Top

American reporters for Al Gore's Current TV, Laura Ling and Euna Lee, were detained and sentence to 12 years of hard labor by the North Korea government when they illegally entered Northern territory in March of this year. In an unprecedented non-US sanctioned diplomatic overture, Bill Clinton met with North Korean officials and worked out a successful pardon for the young reporters. I won't speculate how much the White House was involved but fair to say, Clinton most likely relayed Obama's sentiments during the trip.

This is, however, not so much a success story of rescue but rather a cunning tactic by North Korea leader, Kim Jong-il, to summon the most senior states person they could muster. Given that the White House wanted to remain tough against North Korea's nuclear buildup, Clinton seemed like a good enough alternative.

Rumored to be unwell and even dying, Kim Jong-il was the picture of health in the many photo ops he had with Bill Clinton. Kim knew the high profile detention of the journalists and pardon arranged with Clinton would bring international interest. Mission accomplish. We know North Korea will back on track with their agenda.

Paper Heart - Charlyne Yi

OMG, I've found the cutest thespian evah, Charlyne Yi. Socal native Yi is of Filipino, Spanish, Korean, Irish, German, French, Native American and kitchen sink ancestry. Up to date she's most known for her role as a stoner in Knocked Up. See below.

Yi co-wrote and stars in Paper Heart opening this week. It's a mockumentary with Super Bad's Michael Cera where Yi travels across country asking the aged old question, "What is true love?" Already getting rave reviews, it looks to be a nerd classic. Promo below!

I just adore Charlyne who's many talents include music and magic. Check out her hilarious interview with Conan, especially the song at the end!

Watch more of her royal cuteness here.

Another Gan Mien Western Coming - The Warrior's Way

Hey Hangookphiles, get ready for what looks to be another great Gan Mien Western fantasy action flick coming out this summer! Writer-director, Sngmoo Lee, will showcase his debut film, The Warrior's Way, in collaboration with Lord of the Rings producer, Barrie Osborne. It will star Jang Dong-gun of 2004's Tae Guk Gi (The Brotherhood of War) fame and Kate Bosworth of Blue Crush and Superman Returns.

The premise is reminiscent of the Kung Fu television series in that there's a traveler from a far away land that ends up in the wild wild west circa first half of the 19th century. Lee plays Yang, a highly skilled fugitive warrior who's in possession of a baby. He comes across a circus troupe and bonds with resident knife thrower with a dark past, Lynn, played by Bosworth. Then through illin' looking special affects, Yang and his buddies kick some serious black hat asses. Promos show some cool looking images even if the story seems tired. Looking forward to it very much!

Ninja Assasin - The Rise of Rain

Hellsya! Rain's new movie, "Ninja Assasin," is due out this November. You may know Rain as only the premier pop artist in Korea, or possibly have seen him playing Taejo Togokahn in "Speed Racer," or as Stephen Cobert's nemesis on the Colbert Report. The boy may be a newcomer on the Hollywood big screen but has already had plenty of acting chops with modern classic Korean dramas like, "Full House," and feature films such as, "I'm a Cyborg and That's Okay." .

I have high hopes for Rain in this flick. Judging from the trailer (below), looks like he may just be Bruce Lee reincarnated! Rain's real life reads like a melodrama so he has lots to draw from. Such as his mother's untimely death in 2000 just before he got his first major recording contract. With such intensity in life as in drama, he can easily be the new millennium James Bond. Oh, and in "Ninja Assassin" he gets to kiss the girl! That means more girls (and maybe boys) in his future. Thank you, Lord Buddha.

Watch what took to get so ripped! Also, I really respect that Rain didn't alter his eyes through plastic surgery like the majority of South Korean actors.

Here Rain trains choreographed fights with the 87 Eleven crew (who've worked on 300, Watchmen, Matrix and Borne).
